Kundalini Awakening – what is it and how does it affect us.

Each time we are triggered and take offence, we lose an opportunity to help ourselves to recognise the nature of the trigger and delve into it and understand, and also to help others by extending kindness to those who may be suffering, even if they on the surface do not appear to be. – #intmf

———-
This is my first attempt at a perspective of the nature of Kundalini within myself .. it is therefore very subjective and uninformed as to the divine reason, I will try, with the help of others to convey what it is and what it means and how it proceeds. As time passes, hopefully my understanding will improve.

Kundalini power has nothing to do with religion. However, it has been incorporated to become part and parcel of many religions and cults. Kundalini is a Sanskrit word that means coil; coiled like a snake. It is also referred to as the Serpent Power or the Serpent Fire. Throughout human history, Kundalini has been represented by the symbols of the serpent, fire and the snake. When the snake is shown as coiled it represents Kundalini in Her dormant state. When it is shown coming out of the crown on top of the head, it symbolizes the field of energy of a risen Kundalini.

This extract from Lawrence Edwards book “Awakening Kundalini” may help us to understand!

We naturally possess the capability of consciousness to suddenly or progressively go beyond the ordinary confines of the mind-body-self. We all have the ability to experience how transcendent Consciousness can illuminate things that the ordinary mind finds quite extraordinary. That’s really what is at the heart of understanding Kundalini as the power of Universal Consciousness. Kundalini is the power of transformation through illumination, revelation, and energetic re-creation of the mind-body vessel. It is the motive power of every mystical/spiritual tradition, though each calls it by a different name.

It’s the birthright of every human being to know Kundalini and through this power of grace, to know the Divine as Self. It’s your innate capacity. The term Kundalini may sound foreign, but the power itself is as near to you as your breath. It’s closer to you than any thought; it throbs within you more deeply than your beating heart. It’s present in every aspect of your life.

I’m regularly contacted by people with unrecognized stirrings of Kundalini’s powers. Many of these people are engaged in intense spiritual practices from traditions not typically thought of as Kundalini-related, while on a Tibetan or Zen Buddhist retreat, for example, or while practicing cantering prayer or shamanic rituals. Kundalini experiences begin for some individuals after surviving terrorist attacks or battle injuries. Some people have had awakening experiences while in the process of recovery from addictions. And still others simply had a spontaneous initiation of Kundalini awakening unrelated to activities. These transpersonal experiences and processes can start anywhere, anytime, if one is ripe, if one has reached that place in the soul’s journey when profound awakening is called for.

Since I was a child I have been able to move energy around my body, to feel energy (now recognised as the Kundalini) dancing up the spine and along the nadis, transforming and purifying me by dissolving blockages and freeing energy. Sometimes as a blockage is freed in the body, an insight, sometimes a realisation to a long-held belief or a different perspective on an social dogma arises in my mind, beliefs also dissolve.

A Kundalini awakening can trigger a wide range of phenomena, both positive and negative. It can cause significant changes in the physical, emotional, sensory and psychic capacities, cause stress in vulnerable areas of the body, open the heart and mind to major shifts in perspective, and cause many unique and unfamiliar sensations including shaking, vibrating, spontaneous movement, visions, and many other phenomena. For me there have been many slow physical and psychic changes, they have affected how I see and respond during the process and different changes since the daily physical feeling subsided, this time.

The Ego-Mind works to eliminate peace and stability in our life. It does not seek unity, serenity or harmony; it rejects it. The Ego-mind likes to keep us in an unbalanced state for then it can more easily control us. Sitting quietly and silently will prove this to us. It cannot tolerate being pushed into the background and will begin to assert itself by starting Its roof-brain chatter, thereby, taking control over us again. The ego-Mind likes to separate, dissect and break everything down into minute units of specialization. It compartmentalises and labels everything and every experience … good or bad, right or wrong, keeping everything in a separate box. Today’s human beings’ function in a state of mild insanity – which has now become the norm.

The mind is powerful, but from a spiritual evolution point of view, it is only so long as the ego is subjugated and hence quiet, so the mind becomes the servant, not the master …. Mindfulness brings the reality of perspective … I live on the basis of Accepting what comes while staying present and flow .. though sometimes (rarely) I have to remind myself to be mindful.

Solitude – being on my own for so long – I have learnt so much in solitude – I don’t see things in black and white, nor do I project my beliefs onto others concerning a spiritual path because frankly it is not my place, their own evolution must come from within themselves, their own growth, their own realisations … this includes change, if they are truly seeking, all growth will come from within.

Chakras – Energy centres in the human body

When I first arrived here in Cyprus from India, aside from being very ill, I was in my own little bubble and had to consciously stretch myself to move out of this bubble to engage with people …. We must engage outside of our personal bubbles …. I want and continue to be kind to people as I can be, to spread the love …. why not …. such behaviour brings smiles … I like smiles – kindness brings its own rewards. However, we don’t project your beliefs or other dogma onto others – if they are interested they will ask when they need.

The thing about not working from 9-5 in a job for most days is one has to make up our own mind what work we will do, where will we focus our energy, how shall we keep ourselves busy …. I chose to travel and to learn. I shall finish my book and will publish another perhaps about life and travelling … it is said that the first book is almost always auto-biographical as was the case for me. Part of me wants to finish the book, and I will, but at this point I am not sure about publishing it …. For there are so many life perspectives available.

I have had this thought that stays with me “A spiritual teachers role is not to teach dogma nor to project their beliefs, but to awaken us to our divinity, to show those who can learn how to look, not what to see – I do not believe in just teaching dogma (mine or anyone else’s) … as it is merely a reprise of my or someone else’s experiences or thoughts … teaching others this way means that they might learn – however to truly understand, others must realise for themselves – (But how can they truly understand the depth of someone else’s words from their personal experience of the past) as they have not had the realisations that for instance I have had to get to this point – in my view, for them just to rely on dogma, is a weakness, making them dependant hence not strong and independent for they are dependent on another …. I believe we must show others “how” to look, but in a way by reminding them of their divinity, they will discover their own base, their own path to divinity. I do not believe that two people’s paths are the same, certainly experiences of milestones along the way certainly aren’t … we are going to the same destination by different roads.
Of course, when one is seeking and growing, books are a valuable resource that can really help, their perspectives can trigger us, especially when reflecting afterwards in nature, but there comes a time where other people’s perspectives can be more of a hindrance rather than a help … answers come in the solace of solitude, in experiences, in meditation and prayer, or in just walking in the park.

I have been able to stay present and mindful … and this has a wonderful effect of negating the effects of the ego …. The idea of judgement of others for instance, many years ago I came to the realisation that when we judge others we are in fact revealing an aspect of ourselves that needs healing …. In duality it is almost inescapable to observe, but in my opinion to judge, to reach a outcome can be avoided, we do not need to go to this step …. Also those thoughts that concern the future (fears) … it brings peace and detachment from my own future, although it doesn’t detach me from engaging with my environment.

Like electricity the Kundalini energy is neutral; She does not discriminate. She breaks down all the barriers within the physical body and removes ‘knots’ that are blocking the major energy centres or chakras. These centres are the main distributors of Her energy. Through Her cleansing power, She begins to alter these centres until they are fully opened, purified and transformed. The energy flows freely, without hindrance.
The cleansing process begins at the base of the spine, which is the lowest centre; called the Muladhara. From there, she gradually works Her way up to the crown centre at the top of the head, known as the Sahasrara. It takes years or many life times for a centre to be fully cleansed and opened. After all the centres have been cleaned and Transformed, they will be connected and work together in united harmony.

The ultimate goal of the Kundalini power is to Transmute the physical body of the old man. Out of the old body She will forge a new body – one that will be formed and sustained by the vibrations of a higher vibration frequency level. This new body will be the form for a New Species – let’s call it Cosmic Human. Cosmic Human will have their roots in the Transcendent Realm. Cosmic Human’s Beingness resides within a Higher Consciousness. They are a Being who is united and in Aware contact with their Soul and indirectly with The Divine.

The Kundalini Awakening is doing its work … it is a continuous process. In the beginning, that is before it began, I could feel a “bump” in the energy flow in my spine. Then physical symptoms began which I had no idea what they were, I spoke to Brigitte (My teacher and friend) and told her I could no longer feel the “bump” – she said Kundalini has risen, since then, the Kundalini has been in control of the purification, transformation within.

I believe the Kundalini is an intelligence, a divine being, an agent of the absolute that is divinity, it knows how to proceed for each person. I feel that the Kundalini Awakening is the same or similar to Self-realisation …. The other day I brought the light forward, the light that is within … which now pervades all of me … I do not have to reach for the divine …. It is everywhere …. bring the Universe into your consciousness and there we are embarrassed by its aura, its divinity, its peace and its lessons, it is within us all.

The point of the awakening is the true beginning of the journey back to unity, to God. It is the surrender, the dissolution of the ego-self to the Divine. In reality, however, a Kundalini Awakening is only the beginning of the journey, it is a process. Now that the energy has arisen, the real work has begun.

I now believe that the reason for the rising of the Kundalini energy … the Shakti is self-realization, an explanation can be found here

Perhaps you have a partner – that you and your partner are spiritually on a different path is not a negative or reason for unhappiness, there can be real respect and love for each other, it is rare, please truly value it, this may not affect your relationships in the physical world, for the actual evolution of the consciousness comes basically in solitude and allowing the realisations that come when they will – do let them come, they will come in tiny little steps, each one incrementally building on the one previously …. You may not even be aware until one day you start thinking of things in a different way as for the evolution of the consciousness is a path, a journey of changing our perspective … part of the lessons in my case it was to understand the true nature of love, for most it is not love they feel, for real love is unconditional, a way to understand this is a “mothers love” … children are loved for who they are, and no matter what they do, they are still loved without limits – because most mothers cannot see their children without seeing themselves, their experience, their own process, for them, there is generally no possible separation between them.

No one can make it in the world on their own, and frankly we don’t have to.

The fundamental flaw in humanity is the infection called ego, the belief hammered into children in many areas of the world, (not all) to identify with the mind, that we are all separate, that you are on your own, this empowers the ego and along comes the instruments of separation, such as materialism, status, money, comparison, competition, conflict and between countries eventually war.

Examples of the ego at work is Blame, conflict, confrontation, possession, projection, abuse. +++ and today’s major example is war, a for profit business (it has been at least since World War 2) carried out by the Department of War in many countries, but from a world perspective its weapons are supplied and facilitated by the UN permanent members of the security council, United Kingdom, Russia, United States of America, France and China … these countries along with Germany are focused on money via the supply and sale of weapons – we know that weapons kill …. This fact is something that they, the weapons manufacturers take no responsibility for, many tout peace whilst they sell the instruments of war as well as prepare for war …. That to me is what is so difficult to understand of this world leadership. One set of numbers tells us that over 100 million people have been killed in various conflicts, ethnic cleansing, genocides and democides since World War 2 – Yemen, Syria, Afghanistan and the Palestinians are just current examples.

Although the evidence of the behaviours of the ego are easy to find, the ego too is a creation of the Universe for this stage in our evolution, for the Universe created all … in the past the human animal had a different focus, now human evolution is showing the way to transcend the ego, as now the ego has outlived its usefulness – humans are in the process of shifting to a different evolutionary level and we are within a process for the human animal to transcend or negate the ego.

There are some societies that do not develop the ego as we do in the west, for their focus is not on the self alone, or self-aggrandisement and money, or glory, selfishness or the self, but on community and helping each other …. so it is possible, but Goodness, what a wonder, truly may they inherit the world, I hope they do … we those who are only about the self and materialism simply have no long term future.

If you need some assistance, to understand the Kundalini … I would suggest you drop me an email, leave a comment or follow the link from Kara-Leah, one who has had her own experiences of Kundalini here, another post concerns suggestions on what to do if you have had a Kundalini Awakening – here

Another of his comments on Kundalini is as below ….

The purification process of this energy transformation can be bringing up
latent diseases, muscle spasms, joint problems, digestive problems.
People can go through all kinds of things. Hot flashes and sweats and
things, numbing sensations, all kinds of things that can happen that
aren’t the most pleasant ones that you might hear about in terms of
spiritual transformation.

The most obvious physiological manifestations are allergies to the most normal and mundane things, such as many food and liquids. My diet has radically changed and more than a glass of Alcohol in any form now makes me quite ill … many chemicals (including medicines) have a bodily reaction …

Perhaps I am wrong, but I feel the essence of the Awakening is to purify us and, in this transformation, return us to our first selves, our first born, childhood bodies and the lack of beliefs … when we were all a blank slates to be written on by our parents, our family, our experiences and our environment.

The spiritual path is work, hard work. When Kundalini awakens and rises, divine energy is in charge – we are not, frankly not that we ever were. There’s no way (I am aware of) of stopping the process, even if one would, for the transformation agent is what Kundalini is, You are with Kundalini for the journey, the rest of this life, and maybe others, so enjoy the ride.

The spiritual journey as a whole can be characterised by the phrase ‘follow your bliss’.
